CROSSFIT .....THE SPORT OF FITNESS! You see this phrase all over the place now and you will see a ton of people bashing it. Being a athlete all of my life, I have been involved in the discussion of what is or is not a sport. And I see people saying that Crossfit isn't a sport but just workouts. So when we train, we are only getting better at working out. I disagree to this. Lets look at all the "sports" out there: Basketball, Triathlons, Marathons, Soccer, Boxing, Football, Swimming, etc. People do these to stay in shape all the time. People will run to stay in shape, they will swim to stay in shape, they will ride bikes to stay in shape, etc. So if people do these activities like this, how is it any different than what we do? If you put two people together doing the same task, no matter what it is, you will eventually have a competition between them. So our competitions are just that. A sport is defined as "an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc." Doesn't Olympic lifting take physical prowess? Doesn't running take physical prowess? Doesn't gymnastics take physical prowess? What movements or activities do we have that don't take physical prowess?? Exactly! What we do is a sport!! The activities we do are put together to elicit an increased work capacity over broad time and modal domains. This is fitness! THUS.....CROSSFIT IS THE SPORT OF FITNESS!! I love this stuff!!

As a medical professional, I feel like I need to comment on the previous post regarding statins and hemorrhagic strokes. I feel like the article has some merits and interesting thoughts, but it also needs perspective. I don't think anyone would argue that for the majority of people that improved diet and increased (or more efficient) exercise would be ideal for improving health, but when people have increased cardiovascular risk factors and/or don't take the appropriate health measures then pharmaceutical intervention can be good.
I think the pharmaceutical world is very problematic, and of note in the posted article is that most studies and many doctors are potentially influenced by pharmaceutical money. That being said, I don't think statins should be written off due to a potential (it seems likely, but there are some mixed studies) increase in hemorrhagic stroke. Of the 700,000 people that have strokes annual only 13% or 92,000 are hemorrhagic. The other 87%, 608,000, are ischemic and combining this with the 1.2 million heart attacks that occur annual are the true target of statins (and where studies show they are beneficial). This means that of the nearly 2 million cardiovascular events that occur annually only 92,000 or now only 4.6% are hemorrhagic strokes.
Moral of the story: I believe people should be proactive in their health care. This involves knowing the risks and the benefits of medications, and also the risks involved with their present state of their health and then deciding whether lifestyle changes would be sufficient or whether medication would be appropriate.
I hope this wasn't overly long, biased, or inappropriate for me to post, but I think it's important to know. If anyone has thoughts or questions then please let me know.

Travis,
As always it is nice to get more input on the subject. What this all comes down to in my mind is first be proactive in your health, exercise and eat better (the simple things). Before you start medicating a problem stop and educate yourself, make sure the professional is educated as well. Just like any profession, some professionals in that field can and do start getting lazy in their profession.
I think where we may respectively differ in opinion is as it relates to Cholesterol where is the "risk factor". Seems like today that they are lowering the level to put a lot more people at "risk" and by those standards requiring medication. I am sure there is a point that your cholesterol is high enough that it is a risk, I just don't agree with the level it is currently set at. (PLEASE NOTE I AM NOTE A DOCTOR!!!!, simply my opinion and like a@@holes everyone has one. Sorry if I offended anyone but surely you were all thinking it, plus the addition verbiage about "stink")
Again I do agree with you that we should all educate ourselves more on what we are putting into our bodies.
P.S. I assume you will be signing up for the games Travis!!!!!
